S60 strut installation S60 2004

Am installing struts in a 2004 S60. Got to the point of putting in the new one and it seems to need to be compressed an inch or so to get it to fit. The bolt holes on the struts are below the volt holes on the suspension part. I can almost get it lined up but not quite.

Is there a technique to this? If I could compress the spring I could do this but my spring compressor does not fir with the thing in place, at least it would be a very tight fit at best. Can try it but wanted guidance first.

Thanks, terry
