purge valve, check valve 850 1997

My check engine light has been on since I bought my car 5 yrs ago. It's an evap code that nobody has been able to find. Changed gas cap etc. Recently a dealer told me it was the purge valve and check valve. Can I fix this myself? I'm no mechanic but I can do the easy stuff. Love my car, money's tight and a dealer fix isn't an option right now. One possible clue, there is a fuel smell for a few moments after startup...sure would like that to go away! I'd be grateful for any advice!
