Continuous ticking noise from aircon compressor 850 1996

recently had a new compressor fitted after the old one died

when operating (i.e. aircon switched on) compressor makes a continuous ticking type noise. switch aircon off and its gone.

i've taken it back to volvo and they say its normal?! they also checked belt tension etc and all ok.

is this the case or is everyone elses compressor quiet - apart from the sound heard when clutch switches in.

look forward to any comments
