I've been following this thread with interest since I just replaced a head gasket and rebuilt the head on my 2000 S70.
First of all there are no "hydraulic" lifters in the 5 cyl. engines. There are "tappets" that ride on the cam between it and the valve stem. They do stick and cause clatter due to gunk and varnish build up and from lack of oil. The oil passages for lubrication of the tappets, valve stems, and cam bearings are formed passages and holes in the top valve cover. These passages and holes get clogged with gunk over years of short trips and the result is valve tappet clatter and wearing of the cam bearing upper surfaces.
Once when changing the oil in my 96 850 (250K miles) I accidentally used 3 qts of oil and 3 qts of ATF. After driving it for a week or so I noticed how quiet the valves were. (they had been getting noisy) The ATF has great cleaning properties I learned since then. I drove the car for another 100K miles and it never burned a drop of oil and remained relatively quiet for an engine with that many miles on it. I added 1 qt. of ATF with every oil change,(standard 10W-30) every 5K miles.
Try it! Cost is less than "valve treatment" stuff or engine tear down!
