Brake shoe help 850 1996

I must have done something wrong, but what?

I am replacing brake shoes, rotor, pads. I started on the driver's side because there is more room to work with. I slackened the parking cables to the max, removed the old shoes, and now the OEM rotors don't fit!!!

There are only 2 shoe holders on the 850, I replaced a bent one. I greased all of the important parts.

When I put the large spring on, there is a 1/4 inch gap on one side or the other where the shoes meet at the bottom - separated by metal about 1 inch wide. Is this gap correct? The spreader appears to only fit one way, so I doubt that I have it backward, but who knows!!

The rotor will not go over the shoes, period! The top star wheel is completely closed, as it should be. Without the star wheel, the rotor fits just fine, of course. It is as if the star wheel grew by 1/2 inch.

HELP!

PS. This is embarassing...

It took me 30 minutes to do each V70 brake shoe.
