AWD vs FWD - Opinions, experience, hard data for post-2003 cars?

I've been researching the newer post-2003 V70's and shopping around. I have been focusing on FWD cars because of the problems associated with the '99-'02 cars and a general belief that FWD will be cheaper to maintain that AWD because it is simpler. But a recent light snow got me thinking about the advantage of having AWD to get out of my fairly steep driveway during winter weather.

The purpose of this thread it to solicit comments from those who have experience (and possibly made the switch one direction or the other) with both FWD and AWD cars or those who work on these cars.

Comments? Opinions? Experience? Hard data?

Thanks, in advance, for any info you can share.
