Burning plastic smell... V70-XC70

2009 xc70- Today, out of nowhere, there is a very strong burning plastic smell. Exactly like that if a plastic bag were on the exhaust. Through check...nothing visible. Does this 'ring a bell'? I have an appt at Volvo in 5 days (factory warranty)...but I like to be on top of these things. As you peer down from in front of the engine, there is a 'box'...metal, that appears to be, maybe transmission related?, that is wet with oil. I will take a pic...I don't know this engine, so I cannot identify the part. It has a linkage on top. I'll get back to you on it.
