Backup lights for manual tranny 850

After replacing every bulb in the rear of the car, I noticed 2 things: The the backup lights do not work.

The clutch was replaced a couple of years ago. As far as trouble shooting, I haven't checked the wires for continuity yet. The fuse for the backup lights also does the turn signals, and they work.

How do I check the switch? Do I just remove it and twiddle it with a volt meter?

Or what? The garage is still pretty cold, so I am limiting my exposure time as my fingers get too cold.
