Trunk lid strut installation 850 1996

I've read through the archives some for this problem. I'm in the midst of installing trunk lid supports, purchased from FCP and made by the OEM folks. I've got the front end clipped on, but the back end is about an inch longer than the mounting point, and I can't get the strut to compress for that inch so I can mount it. Am I missing some clever step?
