starter trying but engine not catching 850 1993

I bought a used 93 850 GLT in January (2 months ago exactly) and this morning the car wouldn't start. It has 89K on it and I have no service records before I bought it.

It sounds like the starter is trying to turn the engine over but the engine isn't catching. The sound is somewhat high-pitched, not a scream but definitely not the low roar of the engine turning over.

Could this be the timing belt? The last time I drove it (saturday) everything was fine. It just wouldn't start this morning. I didn't leave lights on so I doubt it's the battery. I'm not touching it until I get a sense what's wrong. If it's the timing belt, I don't want to ruin anything else.
