How to remove dash cup holder? V70-XC70 2001

Does anybody know if there is a way to remove that dash-mounted, collapsable cup holder without removing a bunch of the center console or stereo? I would love to just have a little pocket there to store useful stuff like my glasses case. The thought of using that cup holder for an actual cup just scares me when I see what would be spilled on in the case of some sort of spirited maneuver.

I've heard that it's a big job to put that holder in, but I'm wondering if there is a simple trick to taking it OUT.
