The viscous coupling system in the 2002 is not bad, except for the tires which must be kept at close sizes. The spare may not be used on the rear, ever!

I never had traction problems with my 1998 awd which had the same system. The bevel gear does need flushing every 50K miles or so. The VC unit is not servicable.

The handling differences between the VC and Haldex are very close, the VC has a faster response. But, when temps get above 90F the VC tends to give some of the torque to the rear wheels all of the time, the VC fluid is heat responsive. This does not affect drivability, but you will hear the rear tires squeek at slow speed like in a parking lot that has been sealed.

The 2003+ cars not only have Haldex, but can have computerized traction control. This will modulate the throttle response so you never slide sideways on a turn. Much safer and keeps kids from doing donuts in parking lots :>)
