Limp Home Indication 850

Recently encountered after several very cold days that the 94 850 sat through outside that the limp home light came on when it was started. Was able to get the vehicle home. Parked it in a heated garage. When we went to check it out several days later it seemed to run well. Before we got to read out codes they cleared themselves. Perhaps we just hit the right combination. Anyway, condition has not returned. Am I looking at an electrical issue with the shift lever/ignition or could it be a transmission issue. Fluid (not sure any more if filter was replaced) was replaced several years back. Wondering best trouble shooting approach on this one. Thanks
