troubleshooting ABS w/o scanner? V70-XC70 2004

Is there a way to troubleshoot the ABS without a scanner ? Can I look at the wheel sensors with an analog volt meter and see the signal ? Can I use a voltmeter set to AC to see the signal ? What other signals are in the system that needs to be checked before I decide the ABS module is bad ?

Mary said the ABS light went out today and when she stepped on the brakes, it felt like the ABS was engaging. Then the light came back on.

Rhetorical question: Since the car 'knows' whats wrong, why isn't there a button on the dash that will get it to tell me what the problem is ? It has that nifty little display that says it is time for service...

Points and carbs (well, one carb) is the way to go.

Greg
