Tranny Issues V70 2001

Just received a "panic" email from my sister who has a 2001 V70 (75K) re: transmission issues. She didn`t describe the problems but her indie shop has told her that tranny repairs will have to be done at the dealer. The dealer has quoted her $4800 to replace tranny software. She is, of course, reluctant to spend that kind of money but loves the car & bought it new.
Also she said the ABS light came on at the same time as the Transmission Service Required light came on.
Is the transmission "toast"??
