Maybe buying AWD - Which one?

Been an owner of a Volvo 240 for a few years. Wife is going into real estate, so she needs something a bit more stylish. Her biggest thing is reliability and looks. Needs room for a dog in the back (wagon, SUV, etc...) We don't need AWD (I've heard there can be expensive issue with that). I know things vary year by year too. Can you recommend a good year/model? Ideally we want to spend under $10K. I'm hoping to stay in the world of Volvo's before she wants to simply lease a less safe, crappy, car.

I've had good luck with these guys in the past.
