Just bought an 04 xc70 with 52K+ miles for $10K. Without AWD you should be able to find a decent low mileage 04 V70 or 05 v70 for the $10K you're looking to spend. At the same time I bought an 05 xc90 with 5 cyl engine for $9K with FWD. Mpg from xc90 is poor, 15 to 17 while the xc70 is 20 to 25.
My $0.02, get something as new as possible with low mileage as possible.
