98 V70 no start V70-XC70 1998

1998 V70 with 248k miles

I went out to start the car this morning it started then stalled.
I had this happen several months ago and I unplugged the MAF and it started, so I cleaned it and that fixed it.

So I have tried cleaning the MAF, tried starting it with it unplugged all of which did nothing.

Plugs were pulled and all are firing.

Put everything back in and it will fire occasionally but not enough to get it running.

where do I go form hear? tear into the timing belt to see if it jumped a tooth?
Any thing else I should be checking?

also noticed and don't know if it is normal or not but while cranking the up arrow indicator is on and the winter gear light is too.

Check engine light is on but has been that way for a while since the secondary air pump went out. So I don't know what other codes might be there.
