o-2 adapter cord s40 S40-V40

The 2000 s40 that I'm working on does not have the adapter cord for the oxygen sensor, I have been told that even though the car came new without it,that I need to install one or the car will continue to trigger the code PO-130. the adapter volvo part# 30650686 is not expensive but I really want to know exactly what it does? I assume that it changes the wiring order to the sensor? if that is the case, shouldn't a person be able to do that without the use of extra wire? Is anyone here familiar with this situation willing to shed some light?
Thanks in advance, Bill
