Driving without bevel gear installed? V70-XC70

Can I drive my '00 V70 without the bevel gear installed? The configuration I'm thinking of would be utilizing just the left axle from the transmission to the hub. I don't think the right axle will work without the bevel housing to support it but I could separate the end of the shaft and install that onto the hub (This is based on my notion that the hub and its mounting bolt are what keep the hub together).
If this can work, do I need to remove the rear drive shaft? Will any of that move in relation the the rear wheels moving?
This would just be temporary until I can buy and ship a new bevel gear unit.

The pic is not my stuff, just a pic I'm using to show why I think this might work.
