what's this loose inside distributor cap? 850 1995

I replaced dist. cap and rotor yesterday for the 1st time. Car has 71k miles and it's never been done. It needed it. Rotor was very pitted and cap contacts were covered in carbon.

When I removed the old cap, inside was this loose disc that fits over the shaft (under rotor), slightly conical shape with o-ring around it. It seemed like it should fit in tight, but it wouldn't go, so I left it loose when I put the new cap/rotor back on. Upon the 1st start, I could hear it bouncing around for about 5 seconds, then all went quiet, as normal. I have not heard anything else since so I assume it's OK.

Any thoughts on what this is and should I have tried harder to force it into the head wall?
