I was lucky enough for my father to make it until I was 29. He was an artist, and could barely change a tire. I pride myself on fixing my own problems, but I wouldn't have gotten this far in Volvo mechanics without the brickboard and similar sources.
So here's an update.
Fixed the 940. Was a busted dizzy cap of Italian manufacture. That got the 940 back into my wife's hands as a daily driver and significantly reduced the stress on the 850.
Today, I had a chance to look into the grounds.
The braids were good and clean. The body connections were tight and sold, but both had weirdo bolts at the head, and one side was loose. The other side refused to test good with my multimeter.
I removed both, cleaned the holes and contacts, and installed new bolts. Both now read as perfect connections. We'll see how many goofy issues that solves.
The right rear signal light was still flashing strangely. I removed the light unit and found three different lights flashing. I checked the light panel and found one heavily corroded pin. I cleaned it up and cleaned it out (with brake terminal cleaner) and dried it with compressed air.
Upon re-installation, the signal lights are working just fine, and bulb-out light no longer glows when I put it in reverse.
Time will tell if this fixes the electrical gremlins.
I also (maybe foolishly) dumped another can of R134a into the A/C system.
The compressor cycles perfectly, but the pressure was only reading about 20. Last time, the air came back, but died in about 2 days. It's still possible that the system had gotten so empty that one can didn't do it, or maybe there was a big pocket of air... I topped it up, AC blow cold again. However, I'm expecting to have to do a condenser switch if I want to keep driving this car...
There was no cabin filter when I bought it, but the "well" was pretty clean. Still, I'm not fooling myself.
Will report back WRT the electrical gremlins.
