2001 S60 ebrake shoe retaining spring S60

What I thought would be a straightforward job of replacing the rear rotors and pads on my 01 S60 has become a nightmare. Turns out the parking brake shoes were toast. So I finally got the old parts off one wheel but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the retaining springs that hold the shoes in place installed. VADIS shows a special tool to do this.

What I am encountering is a situation where the slot into which the end of spring fits doesn't seem to be wide enough for an easy fit. Should I open the slot up a bit with a needle file? Is there some trick I'm missing?

Thanks.
