Serpentine Belt Tensioner Removal XC90 1991

I've been experiencing a "chirping" sound from the passenger side of my 2004 XC 90's engine that i figured was serpentine belt-elated. The original belt has 192,000 miles on it, so I decided to replace the belt and the tensioner while I was in there.

After removing the belt I spun the tensioner and it rolled perfectly but I was still motivated to replace it with the one I had bought. However, for the life of me I couldn't figure how I'd either remove the unbolted old unit or insert the new one - just not enough room to pul the old one out or insert the new one.

So I installed the new belt, the "chirping" has gone away, and I'll hold the old belt for emergency use.

I'll probably have the tensioner replaced when I have the timing belt replaced in another 20K miles or so. Still, can you explain to me how an old tensioner can be physically removed and a new one inserted?

Thanks for any advice.
