Entering radio code S70 1998

Need some help.
After pulling my negative battery cable on purpose to assist in clearing the ECU, the radio locks up of course. I have my 4 digit code handy but after obtaining the word "CODE" on the radio screen and depressing my four digit code, the radio gives me a brief "E E E E" and then back to CODE.
It is as if the radio doesn't recognize the pre-set buttons I just depressed.
If I do this again 2 more times, I think it will lock up yet again and then another 2 hours with the key in the ignition will be in order.

Any thoughts?
