Check Engine Light S40-V40 2001

01' S40, 89k miles
Check Engine light came on, Owners Man. says check Gas Cap (no problem) or there is an issue with the Emission Controls.
Checked under hood, can not see any obvious loose hoses/connections.
Anyone know what to look for before I take it to Mechanic?
The last day or two before the light came on, noticed a more than normal drop in RPM's when the A/C compressor kicked in, other than that no other issues.
