after heater core replacement ,vent on drivers side only allows choice of heat or cool position unless replaced V70-XC70 2001

After getting heater core replaced during summer, now with cooler temps coming,I've noticed major fogging on drivers side.Occasionally noticed during summer, but didn't think much of it.
Finally noticed recently on cold AM,No Heat on drivers side. Took car in to get checked, they said it is some vent that needs replacing. It involves taking dash apart and will be approx. 500$!
I remember thinking before heater core replacement, everything works, why do I need this done, other than a wet carpet on drivers side,so I know heat and air worked before.
Very frustrating!
Any suggestions for a less expensive/ easier fix?
At this point my vent is fixed for heat but will have to be changed if I want cool,Not ideal for crazy weather we've been having.
