The SN is not part of the VIN, but is stamped on the engine block on the firewall side of the engine where it is almost impossible to read.

I suggest lifting off the Tbelt cover and take a look at the tensioner. Only late model 1998s got the manual tensioner. The hydraulic tensioner looks like a small black shock absorber.

Remember to check/replace the rollers and check the water pump for play.
