His vs. mine... V70-XC70

I have a 2006 OC XC70- 51K miles...great condition. My friend has a 2002 XC70. We swapped keys for a test ride. I must say, his car has a lot more 'snap' when accelerating. Right off the line it was noticeably quicker. He gets about 20mpg around town, I just checked...16.5 (Same town, same driving). Hmmmm. He suggested that I start with changing the plugs, as I don't know if / when they were done last. Any other ideas to confirm that it is in 'tip top' shape? No codes on my buddy's OBD tool. It is winter now in NY...the temps have dropped. I was thinking that this contributes to the mpg loss since I purchased it about 2 months ago.
