noisy lifters? V70-XC70 1998

I first noticed a rhythmic, metallic sort of noise coming from the engine area a few months ago. It's intermittent, seems to happen more when the car is hot or has been idling/in stop-and-go traffic. It goes tap-tap-tap, in time with the engine speed. I assumed it was something rubbing, but the dealer says it's the lifters and that this noise is "normal".

The car has 56K. Is this noise really normal? (It's fairly loud -- audible with the windows raised as a quiet ticking) Is it really the lifters? Any way to quiet it other than by replacing the lifters?

Thanks,

Marc
