Serpentine belt

Hi,

I have 99 XC70. I replaced the timing belt a few months back, but now have to replace the alt. The serpentine belt tensioner is giving me trouble. I know i removed the serp belt when I did the timing belt, but I cant remember how to release the tension on the serp belt. My tensioner has a plain 14mm nut in the center of the pulley. I think, in the past i just put a wrench on it and went counter clock to remove the tension. When I do that now, the nut starts to loosen without releasing tension. What am i doing wrong.
