Knocking Sound from Gearbox and Steering Squeak S40-V40 2001

Hi!

My Volvo S40 (Phase I), is almost 1 year old now with 23307 km's on the clock. I have two odd problems with my car.

The first one is, whenever I stop the car put it into neutral and back into 1st there is a knock I can hear, and can also feel on the gearlever.

The second problem is a squeak sound from the steering whenever I move it the left or right extremes. I could be the same problem that Nathan raised on the forum.

Do any of you experts out there know what the fixes to these problems are?

I must also agree with some of the guys on the forum. The paintwork on MyS40 is appalling. It chips and scratches easily and when delivered the bumpers and mirrors were a different shade of blue to the rest of the car. I also have some rattles and squeaks but that could just be because of the poor quality South African roads. On the whole I an extremely happy with my Volvo. At least I don’t drive a BMW! Now if only I could afford that S60R…
