Security System? 850 1995

Ok, my wife and I have recently purchased a 95' 855. I have checked the archive to no avail. When you press the lock key on the remote control a red light begins flashing on the dash. Does this car have a security system, and if so what exactly does it do? Owners manual was not really helpfull on this subject either. One other question, it appears that there is a light inside of the armrest similar to the light in the glove box. Is this in fact a light, and how do you go about replacing it. Thanks for the help. Have already gotten a ton of good info.
