Squeaky Clutch 850 93

I have a 5-gear manual '93 850. Recently I noticed that when the car is in

neutral, and the clutch left alone, a squeaky sound emerges from the engine that sounds like a cricket. When I depress the clutch the sound goes away. The sound remains gone while the car is in gear too. In addition, the car shifts gears without any problem. Does anyone know if this is a serous problem? I took it to the local dealership and they quoted my a multi-hundred dollar repair. What could the problem be? Is there hope of a simple and cheap fix? The IRS just cleaned me out today. :)
