100% brightness on the dash is WAY too bright for me anyway, so I always turn that down a bit on all the cars I drive. Seems people like to be "entertained" by the dash because the backlighting is usually all the way up on cars I borrow (or maybe they just never adjusted it since they got the car from the dealer where it is usually set all the way up). Some makes (like GM cars at the rental places) have very loud displays in the dash and that just drives me nuts no matter how much I dim them. I performed an experiment and dimmed my S70's dash lights all the way down. Driving through even the brightest city streets, the dash was sufficiently lit after I got used to it. If I matched the brightness of the dash (in my peripheral field of vision) to the brightness of what I was looking at through the windshield on the brightly lit city streets I still was no where close to the 100%. So, try adjusting the brightness of your dash backlighting such that you can easily see it with your peripheral vision, but so it doesn't draw more attention than the road and you will see that you are no where close to full brightness on that thing. Save yourself some bulbs and time (to replace them) and have a more comfortable driving environment.
