CV axle - priority to fix it? V70-XC70 1998

Will the car die? That depends on how far gone the CV already is. If the CV grease has been slung all over the inner fender, probably 6 months of use or less.

I suggest getting a new axle rather than repairing the boot, cleaning the CV, and adding new grease.

The driver's side has a circlip to hold the axle in the tranny, this requires a pry bar to pop the axle out.

Some of the really cheap Chinese made axles have a slightly smaller diameter tube and do not fit or last as long as OEM or rebuilt OE axles.

It is not a terrible job, most of the repair shops will charge 1 hour of labor. But, shop around if not DIY.
