Malcolm,

I have never had the problem but I'm guessing that it makes sense that it would come on with the engine off, indicating that the battery is not holding a charge. The fact that the lamp goes off confirms it. Why not look in your owners manual which explains all the warning lamps. If you haven't replaced the battery in three to four years then it's time...
