Flashing A/C lights - what's up? 850 1995

I saw the two lights near the A/C switches flashing when my friend's Volvo cranked up. I wish I could remember exactly what the switches were - I think one was for A/C on/off and the second may have been for recirculation. At any rate, they were both flashing in unison for several seconds after cranking and then went off. Is something going wrong with the A/C? (I am thinking about buying the car but I'm a little gun-shy regarding other A/C evaporator problems.) Thanks, Bill
