air escaping or gasping from brake line? V70-XC70 2003

Lately I have been hearing an abnormally bothersome noise that appears to originate by my left foot away from the brake pedal. The sound appears to be an air stream escaping or gasping (like a sucking vacuum). The sound stops when I apply pressure to the brake pedal. It has become more annoying and concerning that it could significantly effect the performance of my braking. Please help. Thanks.
