engine shuddering at highway speeds V70-XC70 1998

This is weird: the last two times I have gotten on the interstate, my V70 (AWD, 168 K miles) had had an engine issue that I can best describe as a shudder. It is as though it is misfiring. It lasts anywhere between 2 and about 7 seconds. If it lasts about five seconds or longer, the check engine light (which is always on) flashes. The shuddering stops, the light stops flashing, and the car drives fine. This does not happen at lower speeds, and it seems to happen on uphills or flats and after driving at interstate speeds for about 10 minutes. (It happened at the exact same spot on the interstate both times, which I find doubly odd.)

Any thoughts?

Thanks, as always!
