strange shifting V70-XC70 2004

Mary's '04 V70 is shifting strangely. Occasionally, it won't shift out of first. The sequence goes like this: Start. ABS light is off. Drive. Trans won't shift out of first. At about the point she would pull over, the ABS light comes on and trans shifts normally. It never does it for me.

Trans fluid was changed last fall. It is at 2 out of 3 bars in the 'Hot' section of the dipstick. ABS works, but the light is on and off erratically, all the time.

Why is shifting the transmission related to the ABS light ?
