How can you secure the door panel above the door handle? 850 1996

Hello All,

I have a '96 850 GLT Wagon with 340,000 miles. Recently the leather/vinyl covered panel that snaps into the passenger door just above the door handle is coming loose. What happens is when I close the passenger door, this panel pops off. This panel is secured by three separate white plastic clips, that are "cone shaped" and have flanges. When you push the panel into the door, the three plastic clips "snap-in" to pre-drilled holes in the door. These clips snap into "board like" material attached to the door. What has happened over time, is the size of the holes in this "board like" material has grown worn/larger from repeated cycles of pushing the panel into place. I replaced the three clips with new ones hoping they would secure the leather/vinyl panel, but to no avail. I tired putting pieces of electrical masking tape on the edges of the pre-drilled holes in the door, hoping to make it a tighter fit when I push in the plastic clips. Again the panel still pops out when I close the door.

850s collectively are approaching the 20 year age mark. My hope is some one out there has figured out a way to fix this problem. I'm all ears to any suggestions.

Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh
