Alternator testing question? V70-XC70

A simple test for your alternator is to put a voltmeter across the red lead and a ground (the engine) and see what the voltage reads. It should be 13.5 to 14 VDC with the engine running.

There are only a few things that usually go wrong with an alternator, the brushes wear out (low voltage), the bearings fail (noise), or the diodes fail (low voltage or a lot of AC ripple on the DC). Bad grounds can cause them to act up too.
