Rear fog lights 850 1995

Rear fog lights, I have the switch right next to my headlight switch and light on instrument panel comes on when I activate them. From the exterior rear of the car I see no noticable difference when they are activated. What exactly should I be looking for to tell if the rear fog lights are functioning properly? Could it be that these lights are burned out?
