Ambient/Outside Temperature Readout V70-XC70 2003

The dashboard display of the outside air temperature shows mostly random temperatures. It may be 70 outside but the display says 15, or 37 degrees. Sometimes it's accurate and other times changes within minutes.

I've read on the board that the problem may be due to the sensor contacts being corroded. Or, a failing sensor. Any other diagnosis?

Also:
1. where is the sensor (is it in the right rear view mirror?)
2. how does one get to it? (I'm reluctant to pry the mirror off- seems like it will break)
3. other than paying a dealer to hook it up to the computer is there anyway to check out the problem before taking it apart?

Thanks
