Replacing spring seat is no fun 850

you can let the axle hang, not sure about the Volvo's but on some the inner joint can over extend and you won't be able to put it back together. I had no issues when doing my struts. Sounds like your strut job did not go well. I'll bet you do the other side in 2 hrs or less, now that you have one under your belt.
