Check your tranny fluid.

Is it brown? Does it smell like burnt metal?

If not, then you don't need a new tranny.

He was trying to make himself a little profit off your worry. I had the tranny replaced on my car and the thing still clunks into reverse - especially after it gets hot. This is just one of those Things That Volvos Do.
