Rattle, rattle, clunk 850 1997

A 'clunk' from a dead shock is expected, but not a rattle unless the shock bushings are also gone.

When you replace the shocks with what ever you choose, not my car, I suggest replacing the upper mounts also. You might have installed some junk rubber that is now gone.

Which reminds me, I need to do the same for my car just because the rear shocks have 160K on them...
