Gas smell (93 850) 850 1993

I filled my gas tank up recently, and probably over-filled it, but I'm not sure..I live in Oregon and was in Washington when I filled it. As it's not something I do regularly, (this might've lead to the issue).

The pump kept turning off after about half a gallon, so I had to manually fill it (both times I filled up at the same gas station in Spokane, albeit it different pumps).

I filled the tank to what I thought would be expected (via gas mileage, miles driven etc) and after I finished there was a bit of gas in the hose/tube to the tank.

And almost immediately after I got back into the car, I noticed that every time my windows or sunroof are open and the car is moving, there was a STRONG smell of gas. My sister, who was behind me in her car, could smell it when we went thru a drive thru.

When the windows are closed, no smell.

Could it be the charcoal filter/canister (vapor canister?) in the engine compartment? I havent had the time (or inclination to check it) over the last few weeks, as I've been on vacation and have maybe driven the car 50 miles since I got back.

I can provide more info if needed, but I'm drawing a blank at anymore circumstances/details that might fit.
