Prior to 2001, it was easy to get the mirror glass off as the clips were in the center of the glass. This video is for the S40, but should be the same for the 2004 XC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOJHTTjeKFI

If you have a helper, you could have a person push on the bottom of the mirror while using the adjust control to move the mirror down. It might just be stuck and need a little help to get moving again.
